Lakeshore Arts spearheads creativity in Mimico by the Lake

Lakeshore Arts has been approved for two City of Toronto mural grants assisting
with the renaissance of Mimico by the Lake; this project support has been
secured from the City of Toronto mural program and the new StreetARToronto
program.

Mimico by the Lake found in the southwest end of Toronto evokes a small town
feeling within a big city. It is a neighbourhood of parks, small family run
businesses and something quite unique – access to the lake. Many who live and
work here value that access and all it has to offer.

This access inspired the development of our theme for these local murals –
water! A call for artists captured an interesting array and interpretation of designs
from a variety of Toronto artists which could showcase their distinctive styles.
“This is an exciting pilot project for us. We will evaluate both murals after
completion with the intent to introduce additional murals and artistry to all the
villages along the lakeshore”, says Executive Director, Susan Nagy.

The two murals include a 20’ installation in Amos Waites Park along the eastern
fence line. Internationally renowned Artists Patrick Thompson and Alexa
Hatanaka have interpreted the water theme by creating a continuous
contemporary wave. Jim Bravo, a well known Toronto muralist, will be evoking a
more nostalgic view of Mimico Creek on the eastside of the soon to be open
Kaboodles Noodles Restaurant, 2491 Lake Shore Blvd. W.

BIA president, Dr. Maureen Henderson states, “We are eager to help Lakeshore
Arts unveil a new mural this coming fall which will add to the beautification and
revitalization of our neighbourhood…we understand the value and power that
public art can have”.

The official unveiling of both murals will take place on Saturday, September 29th
during Culture Days festivities. The schedule will be announced closer to the
date. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to visit both sites to witness
creativity in action.
